Mediation is the process by which couples at any stage of relationship breakdown are enabled to resolve disputed issues for themselves, by informed discussion in a safe, structured and controlled setting.
It does not replace the need for solicitors; it is complementary, as all mediation clients are recommended to obtain independent legal advice, and to put agreements into effect.
Mediators have no stake in the outcome of the process, and do not give advice.
Mediation is completely confidential, save when it is feared that anyone (especially a child) is at risk of harm or abduction. The outcome is recorded in a privileged summary which may not be used or referred to in Court, unlike the factual financial summary which is not.
Mediation can save the harrowing, expensive and de-personalising experience of communicating only through lawyers, and the ordeal and uncertainty of adversarial contested proceedings in Court, the outcome of which are often unsatisfactory to both parties and their children.
David qualified as a Family Mediator in 1990, became accredited by the Family Mediators' Association on 29th November 1996 and appointed a Professional Practice Supervisor and Consultant (PPSC) in January 1997.
Though no longer a mediator himself, David can knowledgeably refer clients to others, as appropriate to the issues involved and characteristics of each individual case.
